A year ago, Windows Phones made their biggest progress by tying up with the then biggest manufacturer of Mobile Phones – Nokia. the Windows Phone platform has been out for over a year, and yet, it has not been able to gain more than 5% of the smartphone market. US is the place for a smartphone, but Windows Phones have not performed well there. They have less than 4% of the share and it does not look like it will improve anytime. the recent huge demand for Nokia 900 must have given some hope for Nokia and Microsoft. But one of the biggest advantages of the Windows Phones is the Customer satisfaction. Windows Phones users are the most happy with their phones and that should be a boost for Microsoft. But despite that, there have been problems that are disturbing the sales.

Let’s look at the disturbing factors that contribute to the failure of Windows Phones

1) Disappointed Manufactures and their lack of confidence
Before tying knot with Nokia, Samsung and HTC were the only recognized manufacturers who were producing Metro UI WP phones. And what is disturbing is that these phones had very less campaigns for advertisement. And hence these phones failed to make it to the customers’ hands. after a dull first few months, Microsoft made the biggest deal by roping in Nokia. Microsoft also gave Nokia $250 for every Nokia WP phone shipped and despite that, they were not managing any success. even the networks seemed less interested in promoting their Windows Phones.

2) WP Marketplace
Some people have a belief that the Windows place is fast growing. According to them, the statement goes as follows,

WP Marketplace managed to hit the 80,000 app mark in less than 18 months, while Apple’s operating system and Android took about 15 and 20 months respectively, to reach the same milestone. This means that the Windows Phone ecosystem is growing faster than Android and roughly at the same pace as Apple’s operating system.

On the contrary, it is a huge problem. over the past couple of years, thanks to the developing App markets like – Apple’s App Store, Google Play Store, Amazon App Market, there have been nearly half a million jobs in the world and that is only for developing apps for mobile phones. with this huge development, the number of developers required for an Android or Apple’s operating system app has reduced to 1 or 2 while an app for the WP phones needs around 10 developers. That clearly shows the disinterest of the developers towards the WP Marketplace.

3) Consumer Indifference
The most important part of any market is the consumers and they have not helped the cause either. the users have been attracted to the Android and iPhone because of the vast options. the consumers have understood that the UI is same and there is not much scope for the WP OS.

Microsoft will hope to come up with some plan with their WP 8 OS to make a change in the market.
